Today marks the first day of school for most students in the Twin Cities. On the West Side this morning we hosted a group of freshman from Hamline University who were participating in Hamline’s “LEAP into St. Paul” annual orientation program. LEAP introduces first-year students at Hamline University to opportunities for community engagement within surrounding neighborhoods and communities.
We had a lot of fun, did a bunch of work, and enjoyed some garden goodies while we gardened.
In Hawthorne on each Wednesday afternoon this summer, youth farmers, LEAD and staff would distribute produce to our elders at North Oaks Residence on the St. Olaf Community Campus. (Yes, where SOCC farm gets its name.) This fall, we are continuing our Wednesday produce distribution and today everyone was particularly excited about those deliciously sweet chocolate cherry tomatoes and the crunchy, juicy, curiously speckled Dragon Tongue snap beans! YUM!
Its Harvest Fest Week! Time to celebrate our young people and their work in the farms. Lyndale Harvest Fest gets the week cracking with a feast at Zion Church on the corner of 33rd and Pillsbury this Wednesday 5:30-7:30pm. To get you in the mood, here are some of my favorite photos of the summer.
Columnist Neal St. Anthony of the Star Tribune shared an article today highlighting Youth Farm’s contributions to MLB’s All-Star Game last week, Full Story Here.
Youth Farm and Urban Roots sold our youth created locally sourced “Roots for the Home Team” salads last week at the Futures Game, Home Run Derby, and Tuesday’s All-Star Game. Here’s a link to the story and some additional photos.
Youth Farmer’s were happy to showcase their Tic-Tac Taco Salad and to meet Amy Klobuchar and R.T Rybak. Special thanks to Susan Moores for all her work to get Roots at such a great event.
Friday was the last day for Minneapolis students! We celebrated at Lyndale elementary during recess with 60 students coming in to harvest a head of lettuce to take home. Later that night we harvested 14 pounds of radishes with All Stars and then took a field trip to Minnehaha Falls. Happy Summer in the City!
Here are a couple quick shots of our All Stars in action this month. We’ve been planting, turning compost, repairing bikes, harvesting hoop house crops, playing soccer, and cooking up dinner. Its been a busy month!
